First worms...now what?!?

There were two things I started this year that give me a little giggle.  The first was my worm farm.  It's only a couple weeks old, but already giving me high hopes.  Also, earlier this summer I started a compost pile.  I know your thinking...poor thing, she doesn't get out much.  Probably so!  But I've tried composting before.  I used a little bucket with a lid and successfully turned everything into soup.  Things happen fast here in the land of the scorching sun.  Well, I didn't want soup.  I want that luxurious compost that looks like black gold.

Here is what I did, but first let me backtrack a little.  Last year my bedroom closet had a little makeover. Afterward I was left several pieces of shelving destined for the bin.  You know the kind,  wire with white plastic coating.  Anyone who knows me, has probably figured out that I just couldn't chuck them.  They would sit around until I found a purpose for them, and I did.  My new compost bin.

I wanted an open compost pile, but with sides.  So I set up the shelving pieces in a large square shape attaching the ends together with wire.  There is no bottom, it just sits on the ground.  I placed it in the garden area to make less work for myself when I want to use my "gold".  Also, there isn't a top.  Composting needs air and water (not a lot).   It also needs turning over once in a while.  I like things to work for me.  So, by leaving it open on the top, the rain can water it, I can easily just walk by and dump stuff into it, and the chickens can pick through it, eating what they want and turning it over.

At first it seemed like a small area.  It's about three feet by three feet and on day one it filled up rather quickly.  I was doing some yard work and filled it with leaves and pine needles.  The next day it rained and the pile shrunk.  It's been about four months, and no matter how many times I fill it up, or how much I add, there is always room for more.  I love it.  Who wants to fill your garbage can with things that can naturally break down and save you money?  My goal is to make my own compost, no more purchasing!
