Sweet potatoes coming out of my ears.

On Monday, I was writing about potatoes.  Well, today I wanted to mention an interesting phenomenon about them.  Last year, I planted sweet potatoes.  Apparently, when I went to harvest them, I hadn't pulled them all up because this year, up he came again.  Potatoes I like to plant, but not sweet potatoes.  It turns into a vine that tramples down your whole garden.  Like having a giant octopus.  Tentacles reaching in every direction.  Just when you get him tamed, the next day you see him heading in another direction.  But once the plant started growing and I figured out what it was, I didn't have the heart to say no to him.  So I let him grow.  and grow.  and grow.  This week the caterpillars ate every leaf off my sweet potato plant.  I thought he'll probably die.

Last night I pulled him out.  And here came the potatoes.  HUGE!!!  I already have over a bucket full and I'm sure I didn't get them all.  (I guess I'll be seeing this plant again next year).  I was told they grow flat under the soil, like they are taking a nap under a blanket.  Nope!  They stand up.  Some even peaking their heads out of the soil.  Of course the last part could have to do with all the rain we've had lately.  Some are long about 8 or 9".  Then there is Big Bubba.  He is the size of a small cantaloupe.  Amazing.  This is all from just one plant.

Like I told you before, potatoes sure are easy to grow.    I didn't even plant this one, this year.  You should try to grow a potato today.  Even if it's just one.  You'll be pleased with the results.   And on a side note, you can even eat the leaves.  They taste a lot like spinach.  Let me in on what kind you plant.
